Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- Entering Saturday, no team in the ECHL averaged more goals per game than the Elmira Jackals (3.66) and with the Kalamazoo Wings scoring 12 goals in their last two contests seemed to be an equation that would result in a high scoring New Years day affair, but that would not be the case as the Jackals hung on to defeat the K-Wings 3-1 at Wings Stadium.

Despite no scoring in the opening period there were plenty of fireworks. The carryover from the physical play of the night before was evident right off the opening face-off. One second into the game, Elmira's Brian Lebler dropped the gloves with Kalamazoo's Brian Jurynec. In the first period, Elmira outshot Kalamazoo 15-9 and both teams squandered their power-play opportunities Kalamazoo went 0-for-2, while Elmira was 0-for 1 with the man-advantage.

The scoreless gridlock would continue in the second period with each team registering 10 shots in the stanza.

Elmira finally broke the tie 4:20 into the third period when Tyler Donati (5th) trickled a one-timer through the five-hole of Riley Gill and just past the goal line.

Eric Lampe (8th) recorded the eventual game-winner on a breakaway as he intercepted a Steven Tarasuk cross-rink pass at the 5:59 mark of the third.

Kalamazoo tried to mount a comeback late in the period, with a shorthanded goal from Aaron Clarke (6th). The goal gives the K-Wings a share of the ECHL league lead in shorthanded goals with eight and it also gives the K-Wings a shorty in three straight games.

Elmira would end any further bid for a comeback by Kalamazoo with an empty-net tally from Corey Cowick (3rd)

The K-Wings and Jackals will continue their four-game stretch with the third-leg this Friday, January 7th with a 7:35 p.m. face-off at the First Arena in Elmira, New York.

Kalamazoo will return to Wings Stadium on Friday, January 21st with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Cincinnati Cyclones on Culver's Night and Frugal Fan Friday, featuring $1 beers and $1 hot dogs.
