Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
The Sioux Falls Pheasants scored eight runs in both games of a doubleheader against the Pensacola Pelicans on Sunday, losing game one 9-8 and winning the second 8-5. The Pheasants' record moved to 53-25 overall. They maintain first place in the North Division by 2 ½ games ahead of the Wichita Wingnuts.
Sioux Falls lost their hold on game one when Pensacola scored four times in the fifth inning to take a 9-7 lead. Lou Palmisano capped the rally with the second of his two doubles, bringing in two runs off reliever Andrew Pluta (4-3). Palmisano was 2-for-3 and Pluta took the loss.
The Pheasants brought in a run in the top of the sixth on a Beau Torbert single, but they could do no more. Pensacola reliever Ron Hill pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save. David Nathanson (5-5) was sufficiently supported for a victory, despite giving up seven runs and nine hits in five innings.
Torbert finished 2-for-4 and Reggie Abercrombie blasted his 19th home run of the season. Tim Hutting also collected three hits and scored three runs. Starter Ryan Shaver did not factor in the decision and remains undefeated this year.
In game two, the Pheasants grabbed a quick lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Abercrombie, followed by a run-scoring double from Torbert. The Pheasants never lost the lead, adding a run on Gus Milner's solo home run in fourth.
Pensacola cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth before the Pheasants jumped on the Pelicans with back-to-back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. Hutting, Abercrombie and Torbert each launched baseballs into the trees beyond the outfield fence to tally four runs. It was the second instance this season where the Pheasants have hit three consecutive home runs and third time they hit three home runs in one inning. Hutting added an RBI single in the sixth for an 8-2 lead.
The Pelicans scored three times in the sixth inning, but Aaron Cotter pitched a perfect seventh for his 21st save of the season. Starter Ryan Rodriguez (10-4) became the first Pheasant hurler to post double-digit wins this season. He tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs and five hits. He walked four and struck out two.
The Pheasants are off on Monday and begin a two-game series against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Tuesday, August 10. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230 AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
