ST. PAUL, MN (August 9, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints could have rolled over after losing all six games on their recent road trip and falling behind 5-2 after the top of the seventh on Monday night, but they scored five runs in the final two innings to defeat the Sioux City Explorers 7-5 at Midway Stadium in front of 5,104.

With the Saints trailing 5-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh Steve Butler led off with a walk. A wild pitch sent Butler to second and Josh Alley walked to put runners at first and second. A second wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third. Brandon Carter reached on an infield single which scored Butler to make it 5-3 and put runners at the corners. Ole Sheldon, who got hit on the hand, but it was ruled a foul ball by the home plate umpire, would later strike out in his at bat, but Carter took off for second and catcher Ray Serrano threw to second baseman Javier Brown who noticed Alley take off from third and fire an errant throw to the plate allowing Alley to score and Carter to go to third cutting the deficit to 5-4. After Jason Cooper was hit by a pitch Chad Gabriel pinch hit and hit a chopper off the plate that pitcher Eddie Delacruz fielded, but his throw to first pulled Kent Sakamoto off the bag and Carter scored tying the game at five.

In the top of the eighth the Explorers threatened with one out. Derek Schermerhorn reached on a fielding error by Carter at second. Brown followed with a single to left putting runners at first and second. Saints manager George Tsamis went to his bullpen for closer Matt Meyer. He got Eric Williams to hit into a fielder's choice and struck out Darrick Hale to end the inning.

In the eighth the Saints completed the come from behind victory. With one out Butler walked and scored on a double from Josh Alley, who then went to third on the throw home. Alley finished the night 3-3 with three doubles, an RBI, a stolen base, three runs scored and two walks. Carter's sacrifice fly scored Alley to give the Saints a two run cushion.

Meyer retired the side in order in the ninth including a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory and help the Saints snap their six game slide. Meyer went 1.2 perfect innings striking out three.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Jason Godin (6-4, 4.46) to the mound against Explorers LHP David Welch (6-5, 3.77). It is Look, Listen and Live night presented by Operation Life Saver.
