Offense Leads Wingnuts Past Lincoln

LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 11-7 at Haymarket Park on Monday night. The Wingnuts collected 15 hits and scored in six different innings. Josh Horn homered and scored three runs while going 3 for 5 in his first game since July 18th.

Tied at 5-5 in the top of the seventh, the Wingnuts used a four-run rally to take their third and final lead of the night. Horn opened the inning with a single to right field and went to third when Ryan Patterson pulled a double down the left field. Horn came in on Jorge Cortes' sacrifice fly to center. Patterson took third on the same play and then scored when Saltdogs' starter Jacob Marceaux balked.

Leading 7-5, Raul Gonzalez singled to left to chase out Marceaux. Carlos Rivera lined a single to center and was followed by a walk to Michael Bell that loaded the bases. Jorge Delgado singled to right to make it 8-5 and a sacrifice fly into foul territory down the left field line by Cesar Suarez drove in the Wingnuts' ninth run of the ballgame.

The Wingnuts added two more in the eighth on another sacrifice fly from Cortes and a two-out, RBI double down the left field line from Bell.

Lincoln battled back twice earlier in the game. Juan Richardson hit a two-out, two-run home run off of Wingnuts' starter Bubba O'Donnell to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth. It was Richardson's second home run of the game. O'Donnell worked six innings, allowing five runs on five hits to earn his second win in as many starts with Wichita. O'Donnell struck out five and walked two.

Rivera hit a two-out, RBI double down the left field line in the top of the first to give the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead. Horn hit a line drive home run to left field in the second to make it 2-0.

After a solo home run from Albenis Machado in the bottom of the second, Bell singled home Gonzalez with a two-out hit to left in the top of the third. Gavin Dickey and Juan Richardson hit solo home runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

The Wingnuts re-gained the lead in the top of the fourth beginning with a leadoff walk to Jorge Delgado. Cesar Suarez executed a hit-and-run single through the right side that put runners on the corners. Jeff Christy hit a sacrifice fly to right that put Wichita in front 4-3. Patterson hit a two-out, RBI single to center later in the inning to make it 5-3, extending his hitting streak to 16 games in a row.

Lincoln added two runs, one unearned, in the bottom of the eighth against the Wingnuts bullpen. Luke Massetti worked the final 1.2 innings in relief. Brandon Mathes and Dustin Pease each worked 0.2 IP.

Game two of the three-game set is Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Gabe Medina goes up against right-hander Jim Paduch.
