State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - 2016 sixth-round draft choice Tommy Edman produced four hits in his professional debut, and the State College Spikes rallied to top the Williamsport Crosscutters, 6-3, on Opening Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Saturday.

A crowd of 5,088 fans watched the Spikes (1-1), who had not led at any point of the season's first 16 innings, produced a three-run eighth inning to surge past the Crosscutters (1-1).

Back-to-back walks by Jeremy Martinez and Ryan McCarvel started the rally, and after pinch-runner Danny Martin beat a throw to third on Mick Fennell's bunt, two wild pitches gave State College the advantage. Jose Martinez's sacrifice fly finalized the scoring.

Edman, a product of Stanford University, keyed the Spikes offense to that point with two doubles as part of four hits in his first four professional at-bats. The offensive assault nearly gave Edman a piece of history, as both the double and hit totals were just one shy of State College single-game franchise records.

Williamsport took the early lead on Jose Antequera's sacrifice fly in the third. After Jose Martinez tied the game for the Spikes with a run-scoring groundout in the same frame, Jake Sweaney's double and Jesus Alastre's single each plated runs in the fifth for the Crosscutters.

State College tied the game in the sixth thanks to RBI singles from Bladimil Franco and Ryan McCarvel before the late burst shored up the victory.

Dewin Perez (1-0) earned the victory in relief in his return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Perez, who was part of the starting rotation for the 2014 New York-Penn League championship team, tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to finish the game. The southpaw yielded one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Williamsport reliever Guery Ortiz (0-1) took the loss after being charged with all three Spikes runs in the eighth. Ortiz threw a total of 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

Before the game, the PIAA Class AAA state baseball champion Bellefonte Red Raiders threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2016 season to their fathers and other people of impact in their lives to celebrate Father's Day weekend. The Red Raiders were also honored during the game for winning the first state baseball title in school history.

Sunday, the Spikes welcome a new opponent to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) come to town to start a three-game set with a 6:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send right-hander Steven Farinaro to the mound to face Hudson Valley left-hander Brock Burke.

Fans can bring Dad to the ballpark for the Salute to Fathers, and have the chance to make it the best Father's Day ever with the Ultimate Father/Child Prize Package Giveaway, presented by First National Bank.
