Cyclones No-Hit in Staten Island, Fall 2-1 in Extras

STATEN ISLAND, NY - To say the season could have started better for the Cyclones would be an understatement. One night after falling to the Staten Island Yankees in 20 innings, Brooklyn fell to the Baby Bombers in extra innings again - this time while being no-hit. It marked the first time in franchise history that the Cyclones have been no-hit as they fell by the score of 2-1 in 10 innings. Through the first two games of the season, the Cyclones are batting .074 (7-95) over the course of 30 innings.

For the second night in a row, Enmanuel Zabala was responsible for giving Brooklyn a first inning lead. The outfielder was hit by a pitch to start the game, and eventually worked his way around the bases, scoring on a wild pitch from Yankees starter Drew Finley to give Brooklyn an early 1-0 edge. In the top of the second inning, Nick Sergakis, a recent draft selection from Ohio State, was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and eventually moved into scoring position with a steal of second base, but was stranded there. After Sergagkis reached first base, the next 27 Cyclones batters were retired in order.

Brooklyn starter Harol Gonzalez was solid in his Brooklyn debut, cruising through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters, the Yankees were able to mount a two-out rally. Kane Sweenet doubled to right field and came around to score on an RBI single from Timmy Robinson. A single from Drew Bridges and a walk of Keith Skinner loaded the bases for the Yankees, but Gonzalez was able to get Yoanauris Rodriguez to pop out to second base and end the threat. Staten Island loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth, but again, the righthander was able to wiggle out of trouble and keep the score knotted at 1-1.

Bryce Beeler took the mound in the sixth for Brooklyn, making his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John Surgery in 2015, and was extremely effective. The Texas native tossed 4.0 shutout frames, allowing just one walk while striking out three. Beeler's effort was matched by Yankees reliever Josh Roeder who also tossed 4.0 shutout innings, striking out 10, and was credited with the win after Staten Island scored in the bottom of the 10th.

Pitching for the second straight night, LHP Adrian Almeida quickly found himself in trouble in extra frames. Dalton Blaser, who scored the winning run on Friday night, was once again at the heart of the game winning rally. The outfielder was hit by a pitch with one out and moved into scoring position when Dom Thompson-Williams worked a walk. Almeida then uncorked a wild pitch to move the game-winning, and no-hit clinching, runner just 90 feet away. Kane Sweeney then sealed the deal with a single through the left side of the infield to give Staten Island a 2-1 victory.

The Cyclones will look to rebound from a pair of heart-breaking losses when they return to Coney Island on Sunday afternoon to take on the Tri-City ValleyCats. It's a Sunday FunDay at the ballpark, and that means that fans will be invited to participate in a pre-game catch on the field prior to first pitch.
