Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Niles, OH - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and West Virginia Black Bears put on a classic pitcher's duel on Saturday night at Eastwood Field. Triston McKenzie and James Marvel would both start and go six innings without allowing an earned run and would combine to strike out 11. Unfortunately for Mahoning Valley, the Black Bears would push across three runs for a 3-1 win.

McKenzie, the 2015 first round draft choice of the Cleveland Indians, would cruise through the first four innings before allowing a base hit to Jordan George to lead off the top of the fifth inning.

Despite striking out six, the Black Bears would get to McKenzie for an unearned run in the sixth inning. With two outs Ty Moore would advance from first on a throwing error by McKenzie on a pickoff attempt. A wild pitch would move Moore to third. Following a walk by Albert Baur, Moore would steal home for a 1-0 West Virginia lead.

West Virginia would add two more off the Scrappers bullpen in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Baur would single to score Sandy Santos. Baur would also score on an RBI triple from Jordan George for a 3-0 lead.

The Scrappers would get their lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Mitch Longo tripled into the right field corner. He would then come in to score on a wild pitch to push the score to the final of 3-1.

With the loss the Scrappers fall to 0-2 to start the season. McKenzie (0-1) took the loss while James Marvel (1-0) earned the win.

The Scrappers will now head to Auburn, NY for a three game series with the Auburn Doubledays. The Scrappers return home on Saturday, June 25th for Bo Pelini Bobblehead night and YSU night. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
