Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA - Four Vermont errors led to seven unearned runs as the Lake Monsters dropped to 0-2 on the young season with a 9-5 New York-Penn League loss to the Lowell Spinners on Saturday evening at LeLecheur Park.
The Spinners took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Victor Acosta RBI single, then added three unearned runs in the third after a fielding error by first baseman Jhonny Rodriguez to leadoff the inning. Vermont starter Dakota Chalmers worked two-thirds of the way out of a no-out, bases loaded jam in the third with two strikeouts before a Yoan Aybar two-run single and run-scoring wild pitch gave Lowell a 4-0 lead.
Spinner starter Josh Pennington retired the first 10 batters he faced (seven by strikeout) before the Lake Monsters got back-to-back one-out doubles in the fourth from Luis Barrera and Carson Blair to plate Vermont's first run of the season. Rodriguez followed with a long two-run homer to left-centerfield to cut the Lake Monsters deficit to 4-3.
Vermont trailed 5-3 in the fifth when Jesus Lage singled with one out and James Terrell followed with a two-run homer of his own off the leftfield scoreboard to tie the game at five. But the Spinners retook the lead in bottom sixth when Jagger Rusconi advanced to second on a two-out Lage fielding error at second base and scored on a Tyler Hill RBI single to rightfield.
The score stayed 6-5 until the bottom of the eighth when with two outs and a runner on second it looked like the Lake Monsters would get out of the inning with a Rusconi strikeout in the dirt, but Rodriguez was unable to catch the throw from catcher Brett Sunde at first base that allowed Chris Madera to score. Tyler Hill followed with a triple to centerfield that scored Rusconi, while Hill scored when shortstop Eric Marinez's throw to third on the triple went into the Vermont dugout.
Chalmers allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts over three innings in his first New York-Penn League appearance, while Dustin Driver (0-1) was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits over 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Lowell reliever Daniel Gonzalez (1-0) gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings to earn the victory, while Daniel Bautista two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings for the save.
Hill finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Lowell (2-0), while Rusconi scored three runs and Madera two runs despite the first two batters in the Spinners order combining to officially go 0-for-5 at the plate. Barrera was 2-for-4 with one run and a pair of doubles for Vermont, which starts the season 0-2 for the second straight year and third time in the last four.
Vermont opens its 2016 home season at historic Centennial Field on Sunday against the Connecticut Tigers with first pitched scheduled for 5:05 pm. Gates open at 4:00 pm with the first 2,500 fans receiving a free Pepsi Opening Day 2016 Lake Monsters Magnetic Schedule, while fans can play toss in the Centennial outfield following the game with the first "Have A Catch" Sunday of the season.
