West Virginia Black Bears Kick off 2016 Season with a Sweep

The 2015 New York-Penn League Champions, the West Virginia Black Bears kicked off their 2016 season in winning fashion! Sweeping the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a two game road series.

(June 17)- WV Black Bears 2B Sandy Santos got the bats going in the top of the first with a sharp line drive single to left field. LF Ty Moore followed Santos' lead with a groundout to first advancing Santos to third. With Santos in scoring position, 3B Will Craig popped out to second followed by 1B Albert Baur's groundout to second, leaving Santos stranded. Starting P Stephen Meyer started out strong, managing to strikeout the side despite a one out single in the bottom of the first.

The scoring began in the bottom of the third when Scrappers 2B Alexis Pantoja reached on a fielding error by 2B Trae Arbet later stealing second and eventually scoring on a single by SS Luke Wakamatsu putting the Scrappers on the board 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, LF Jodd Carter doubled on a fly ball to right field later scoring on a single by C Gian Paul Gonzalez making the score 2-0.

The Black Bears finally got on the board in the top of the fifth with a hard hit triple to right field by 2B Erik Forgione followed by a Santos double to left field scoring Forgione. Moore was then hit by pitch bringing up Craig who singled on a ground ball to right scoring Santos and advancing Moore to third. Craig advanced to second on an error by 3B Erlin Cerda. Baur gave the Black Bears a two run lead on line drive double to left scoring Moore and Craig. In the bottom of the fifth, Meyer gave up a solo homerun to 1B Emmanuel Tapia putting Mahoning Valley within a run.

In the bottom of the seventh, relief P Julio Vivas allowed a single followed by a walk letting SS Luke Wakamatsu score tying the game.

The game remained tied until the top of the eleventh when C Kevin Krause hit a single up the middle followed by Arbet's sacrifice bunt advancing Krause to second. Santos continued his hitting streak to put the Black Bears on top with a double to center field scoring Krause making the final score 5-4 Black Bears.

(June 18)- Game two started with a pitching duel that continued until the top of the sixth when 2B Erik Forgione took off with a line drive single up the middle. CF Sandy Santos advanced Forgione to second with a sacrifice bunt followed by a single to center by LF Ty Moore with efforts to score Forgione who was thrown out at home. With 1B Albert Baur at bat, a pick off error by Scrappers 1B Tristan McKenzie, advanced Moore to second trailed by a second error allowing Moore to steal third and eventually score putting the Black Bears on top, 1-0.

The Black Bears added to their one run lead in the top of the eight with a single to left by Santos who reached second on a missed catch error and advanced to third by a groundout by Moore. Santos scored on a single to right by Baur making the score 2-0. A hard hit triple to center field by DH Jordan George would then score Baur giving the Black Bear a three run lead. In the bottom of the eighth, the Scrappers were able to get on the board with a triple to right by RF Mitch Longo followed by a wild pitch making the score 3-1.

The Black Bears held off the Scrappers in the bottom of the ninth by a final score of 3-1 taking the two game sweep against Mahoning Valley to get their 2016 season off to a great start. The Black Bears will be back in action for their Home Opener tomorrow at 4:05 pm versus the Batavia Muckdogs.
