TROY, N.Y. - The Connecticut Tigers (1-1) grabbed their first win of 2016 with a 9-5 triumph over the Tri-City Valley Cats (1-1) on Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Aided by a couple of walks by ValleyCats starter, Ben Smith, the Tigers also benefited from two ValleyCats errors.
With the Tigers leading 2-0, Tanner Donnels (3-4, 2 RBI) delivered an RBI-double down the first base line scoring Joey Havrilak to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Andres Sthormes (1-5, 2 RBI) then stroked a two-run triple to the right-center field gap to plate a pair and cap the scoring in the first.
The Tigers added on to the lead in the second when Joey Havrilak (1-3, 3 RBI, 3 R) hit a three-run home run, his first of the year, into the right field bullpen, making it 8-1 Tigers.
The Tigers bullpen maneuvered around bases runners for the majority of the late innings but were able to get the job done. Jose Fuentes (1-0) pitched 1.2 innings, walked three batters but also struck out three. Fuentes got out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fifth by striking out ValleyCats catcher Jake Rogers, keeping it an 8-4 Tigers lead.
In the seventh inning, Emmanuel Chavez got out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam by locking up Brauly Mejia on a nasty breaking ball to end the inning. The strikeout kept the Tigers ahead 8-5.
In the ninth inning, Eduardo Jimenez loaded the bases with two-outs but a great play by Junnell Ledezma on a slow chopper to second, locked down the win for the Tigers.
ValleyCats leftfielder Stephen Wrenn had an exceptional night at the plate, going 3-3 with four runs scored and walked twice.
Josh Lester (0-2, 3 BB, 2 R) and Cole Bauml (1-2, 2 R, 3 BB) were key cogs at the top of the order. Getting on base to start multiple Tigers rallies.
