Cyclones Lose 20-Inning Marathon on Opening Day

BROOKLYN, NY - The 2016 season opener was one for the record books and will be surely be remembered for...well...as long as the game seemingly lasted. What started in front of a sold out crowd on Friday night, finished on Saturday morning in front of a few hardy soles as the Staten Island Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones by the score of 3-2 in a 20 inning marathon that lasted five hours and 39 minutes.

Brooklyn centerfielder Enmanuel Zabala lead off in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot, his first home run since 2013, and the first time the Cyclones have ever opened a season with a home run, to take a 1-0 lead.

After trading zeroes in the second and third innings, Staten Island jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Mandy Alvarez RBI double and a sac fly from Kendall Coleman that made it 2-1 in favor of the Baby Bombers

But in the bottom of the frame, the Cyclones clawed back to draw even after Brandon Brosher connected on a booming, one-out double and came around to score when Darryl Knight followed with a triple into the left-centerfield gap that knotted the score at 2-2.

And that's how it would stay for a very, very, very, very long time. Seven Cyclones relievers combined for 12.0 scoreless innings on the mound, and even Franklin Correa , an infielder by trade, added a pair of scoreless innings. As the score stayed tied until the top of the 20th innings.

Dionis Paulino was the second position player to take the mound for the Cyclones and quickly found himself in trouble as he issued three consecutive walks to load the bases. Ricardo Ferreira then took advantage of the scoring chance with a sacrifice fly that gave the Yankees a 3-2 win.

On the night, the two teams combined to toss 553 pitches and struck out 41 times, including a franchise record 22 punch outs by Cyclones pitchers. The Yankees, who had traffic on the bases all night long, went 1-for-18 with RISP and left 21 men on base. Brooklyn was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base in the loss.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday night (or should be just say tonight) at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Staten Island, as the Yankees open their home slate for the 2016 campaign. The Cyclones will return to MCU Park on Sunday, Father's Day, to open a three-game set against the Tri-City Valley Cats. It's a Sunday Funday, and that means a chance for fans to have a pre-game catch on the field starting at 3:00 PM. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
