Eddie Kunz Becomes Latest B-Met To Head To The Majors

August 3, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today they have purchased the contract of Binghamton Mets pitcher Eddie Kunz. He replaces fellow pitcher John Maine, who has been put on the Disabled List with a right shoulder strain. Kunz is expected to be in uniform this afternoon, when the Mets play at Houston.

The Mets' first pick in the 2007 draft, Kunz has been Binghamton's closer all season. The 6'6" righthander leads the Eastern League with 27 saves and his 44 appearances tie him for fourth in the circuit. Kunz has also struck out 43 in 48 1/3 innings while maintaining a 2.79 ERA.

The 22-year-old has turned it up a notch of late. Dating back to June 20th, Kunz hasn't allowed a run in his last 15 appearances, spanning 17 innings, while converting all 11 of his save chances during that stretch.

Kunz becomes the third member of the 2008 B-Mets, and second in two days, to join the Mets. Daniel Murphy made his Major League debut Saturday after one game at Triple-A New Orleans. Nick Evans, who went from the B-Mets to the New York Mets on May 24th, is currently in his second stint with the big club.

Today, the Binghamton Mets continue their six-game road trip with a 1:35 p.m. contest against the New Britain Rock Cats. The B-Mets return home Thursday, when they open a seven-game homestand with a 7:05 game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
