Defenders Shutout/Drop Fifth Straight

MANCHESTER, NH- Defender's starting hurler, Garrett Broshuis has become accustomed to volumes of run-support in the 2008 season. Sunday afternoon, conversely, was the anti-thesis of that as the Defenders were shutout by the Fisher Cats, 8-0.
Through three innings, Broshuis resembled Hungarian-American escapologist, Harry Houdini. Uncharacteristically, Broshuis walked three through two innings but found ways to get out unscathed.
Brandon Magee took the ball for the opposition as he started out just as well as Broshuis. Through three innings of baseball, the two had dueled to a 0-0 tie.
After a scoreless top half of the fourth, the Fisher Cats broke the silence in the last of the frame. A leadoff double by J.P. Arencibia turned into a run as Jacob Butler's seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield allowed Arencibia to score. Two more run-scoring singles would follow as the F-Cats grasped a 3-0 advantage.
With Broshuis' day cut short, Paul Oseguera took over the pitching duties. Travis Snider rudely greeted the lefty with a single to start the home half of the fifth but Oseguera would battle back and fan the pesky Arencibia on five pitches. Unfortunately, Oseguera's success was brief and short-lived as he would be terrorized by the next three hitters. Andrew Pinckney, David Smith and Kyle Phillips went back-to-back-to-back on the southpaw as the lead inflated to 7-0.
Goose eggs plagued the scoreboard for the Defenders throughout the rest of the contest as their offensive woes were on full display. Connecticut's relievers kept the game where it stood until the eighth when one run came across on a long base hit to push the game to 8-0; but the lack of batting prowess was the story.
Broshuis suffered his seventh loss of the year as he dropped to 12-7 in 2008. Brandon Magee improved to 5-11 as he went all nine innings, allowed no runs, four base hits, walked two and struck out four. The complete game shutout was the first by Magee in 2008.
The Defenders will be back at home for 10 games in eight days at Dodd Stadium, starting on Monday against the Trenton Thunder at 6:35pm. Tickets are available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
