August 3, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Former Binghamton Mets catcher Drew Butera drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the New Britain Rock Cats overcame a four-run deficit to win 6-5 at New Britain Stadium Sunday. The B-Mets lost two of three in the series.
Binghamton (60-56) went ahead in the second when Shawn Bowman led off with a double and scored on Salvador Paniagua's base hit two batters later. Binghamton would add another in the fourth. After Ambiorix Concepcion singled and Bowman walked, Anderson Machado doubled to left, scoring Concepcion for a 2-0 B-Mets lead.
Bowman began the sixth with his second double of the day before Josh Petersen drove him in with a triple. Machado singled in Petersen to give Binghamton a 4-0 lead.
New Britain (46-67) had trouble getting to Eric Brown through the first five innings, as the righthander retired 15 of the first 17. However, the Rock Cats picked up four straight two-out hits in the sixth. Brock Peterson's RBI double ended the shutout before David Winfree and Danny Valencia added run-scoring singles that cut Binghamton's lead to 4-3.
The B-Mets picked up an insurance run in the seventh when Jonathan Malo walked, moved to second on Mike Carp's groundout and scored when Caleb Stewart lined a single to center. However, Felix Molina and Brian Dinkelman drove in runs with a single and double, respectively, off Joe Hietpas in the eighth, tying the score.
Winfree opened the bottom of the ninth with a double off Tim Lavigne. Lavigne (2-3) intentionally walked Erik Lis before Valencia singled, loading the bases. Winfree was retired on a force play at home for the inning's first out. Drew Butera followed with a grounder to short. The B-Mets got an out at second, but Machado's relay to first was wide as Lis scored the winning run.
Ben Julianel (2-2) retired the B-Mets in order in the top of the ninth for the win.
Monday, the Binghamton Mets open a three-game series against the Bowie Baysox. Lefty Mike Antonini (0-1, 4.91) will start for Binghamton against Chris Tillman (7-3, 3.67) of Bowie. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Prince Georges Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
