Beat Columbus 2-1 on Masa?s last minute goal
GREENVILLE - The East Coast Hockey League's Southeast Division Champion Greenville Grrrowl won their final home game of the 2001-2002 regular season Friday beating the Columbus Cottonmouths 2-1. Tyrone Garner made 23 saves and Martin Masa scored the game-winning goal with :43.66 left in regulation.
The Grrrowl opened the scoring on Simon Tremblay's 11th goal of the season, his first since being acquired from the Reading Royals at the ECHL trade deadline, on assists from Luke Sellars and Martin Masa 5:20 into the first period. Tremblay was placed back on the Grrrowl roster earlier in the day after spending a week on loan to the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins.
Columbus replaced starting goaltender Nolan McDonald with Alex Fomitchev at the start of the second period and tied the game at 1-1 7:00 into the middle period on a power-play goal by Justin Kearns, his sixth goal of the season, on assists from Mike Omicioli and Terry Marchant.
It appeared the game would head to overtime tied at 1-1, but Masa one timed a shot from between the face off circles in the Columbus zone for the game-winning goal at 19:16 of the third period with Sean Venedam and Colin Pepperall assisting on the tally.
The Grrrowl were 0 for 3 on the power play, 3 for 4 on the penalty kill and outshot Columbus 36-24.
The Grrrowl will finish the regular season on the road versus the Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and in Columbus Sunday at 4 p.m. They will host games one and two of the first round of the ECHL's Kelly Cup Playoffs next Thursday and Friday April 4th and 5th at 7:05 p..m.
