Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kernels (4-1) came out swinging out Monday night in a 10-2 runaway run over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (2-3). Cedar Rapids put up 3 runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings, and David Hurlbut led the way with a quality start on the mound.
In both the 1st and 2nd innings, back to back walks began and set up the frame. Dalton Hicks doubled off the wall in right to bring home Byron Buxton, putting the Kernels up 1-0 right away. Adam Brett Walker then doubled off the wall in left to score both Romy Jimenez and Hicks, and Cedar Rapids led 3-0 after one inning. Two walks set the stage for Buxton in the 2nd inning as the centerfielder launched his 2nd home run of the season - a 3-run blast just to the right of dead center.
The 6-0 lead was more than enough for starter David Hurlbut (1-0). The lefty went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 0. The only blemish came in the 4th inning when Mitch Haniger doubled, and Clint Coulter followed with a 2-run home run off of the video board in left center that cut the Kernels lead to 6-2.
Travis Harrison got one of the runs back in the 5th inning with a solo homer. His 1st of the season was a line shot that just got over the wall in left and put Cedar Rapids up 7-2.
The Kernels added 3 unearned runs in the 8th inning. With two outs Candido Pimentel reached on a throwing error, which allowed J.D. Williams to score. Three batters later, Adam Brett Walker's 2-RBI single scored Pimentel and Romy Jimenez and put the game out of reach at 10-2.
Tyler Jones went 2 innings in relief, not allowing a hit or run while striking out 2. Chris Mazza pitched the 9th inning, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit.
