PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs got five solid innings out of starter Joe Cuda and their bullpen took it the rest of the way in a 4-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers on Monday night in Midwest League action at Chiefs Stadium.
The Snappers now have a record of 1-4 in the 2013 season. The Chiefs move above the .500 mark to 3-2 by taking the series opener.
Cuda (1-0) did his job in five innings of work. He allowed eight hits, but walked just one and held the opposition to one run. He also struck out five. The run Beloit did get off him came in the fifth, when Brett Vertigan (3-5, run) laced a one out triple into center. John Wooten singled to score Vertigan and pick up an RBI.
Peoria didn't wait nearly as long to get on the board. In the very first inning, Jacob Wilson lofted a two-run homer over the left field wall for the early lead against Austin House (0-1). In the fifth, after the Snappers had cut the lead to one, the Chiefs responded with a run of their own on a groundout that brought in Jordan Walton (3-4, run, RBI). Walton then knocked in the final run with an RBI single in the sixth.
The bullpen took over in the sixth when Cuda departed. Corey Baker was the first one in and he kept Beloit in check through two innings, striking out four. Zachary Petrick was the next man up and he did allow the Snappers to bring up the tying run in the ninth, but he got Vertigan to pop out and struck out Chris Bostick, ending the game and earning him his first save.
Game two of three between these teams is scheduled to take place Tuesday at 6:30pm. RHP Raul Alcantara (0-1, 12.27 ERA) will make his second start of the year for Beloit and LHP Hector Hernandez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is set to pitch for Peoria.
