Lansing Lugnuts News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. - Gustavo Pierre belted a two-run homer to help the Lansing Lugnuts (3-2) erase a three-run deficit, but an unearned sixth inning run lifted the Bowling Green Hot Rods to a 4-3 win on Monday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
After the Hot Rods built an early 3-0 lead, Lansing struck back against reliever Eduar Quinonez in the top of the sixth, tying the score on a Ronnie Melendez RBI groundout and Pierre's first home run of the season.
In the home half of the sixth, however, Tommy Coyle drew a one-out walk from reliever Wil Browning (Loss, 0-2). Justin O'Conner followed with a dribbler in front of the plate, which catcher Santiago Nessy threw into center field in trying to force Coyle at second. Leonardo Reginatto followed with an RBI groundout, supplying the tie-breaking run.
Quinonez (Win, 1-0) pitched four innings out of the pen in relief of phenom Taylor Guerrieri to earn the win. The Hot Rods received a perfect eighth from Jose Molina before Ryan Garton (Save, 1) struck out the side around a Kellen Sweeney single in the ninth.
The game began with the intriguing matchup of Bowling Green's Guerrieri, rated Tampa Bay's #3 prospect by Baseball America, against Lansing's Daniel Norris, rated Toronto's #6 prospect. Guerrieri shined, striking out four while allowing only a lone Chris Hawkins single in three innings. Norris, in comparison, gave up six hits, two walks and three runs in his three frames.
Coyle drew four walks in the win for Bowling Green.
Lansing cleanup hitter Balbino Fuenmayor went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the loss.
The Lugnuts and Hot Rods play the middle affair of their three-game set at 11:35 a.m. ET, with Lugs right-hander Javier Avendano (0-0, 0.00) pitted against Bowling Green right-hander Jeff Ames (0-0, 1.80).
Lansing returns home to face the Michigan State Spartans in the Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 11th.
