Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs got two early runs and great pitching Monday night to knock off the Beloit Snappers 4-1 at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The win, their third in a row, moves the Chiefs to 3-2 with two games left on the homestand.
With two outs in the first inning, Patrick Wisdom got the bats going with a double to left field. Jacob Wilson followed with a two-run home run to left putting the Chiefs up 2-0. The Wilson home run, off Beloit starter Austin House, was his second in as many days and the Chiefs fifth as a team in the last nine innings.
After the Snappers scored in the top half of the fifth inning against Joe Cuda, the Chiefs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. Jordan Walton led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a Gerwuins Velazco single. Walton advanced to third on a Michael Swinson flyout, and scored on a Breyvic Valera ground out.
Leading 3-1, Peoria manufactured another run in the following inning. Ildemaro Vargas and Alex Mejia cracked back-to-back singles with one out in the inning, and after a Nick Martini fly out, Walton drove in Vargas with a single of his own. It was Walton's first RBI this season, putting the Chiefs up 4-1.
Cuda (1-0) picked up the win, striking out five batters in five innings while surrendering eight hits. Despite allowing base runners, Cuda managed to strand seven Snappers while on the mound, only giving up one run. Corey Baker threw two scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out four. Zach Petrick earned his first save with five strikeouts over two shutout innings.
