Captains Losing Streak at Four Games with 6-5 Loss to Loons

(Midland, MI) - The Great Lakes Loons scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the ballgame at four, and carried that momentum to a 6-5 win on Monday Night at Dow Diamond. The inning began with a double that hit Baker in the leg and rolled all the way to the Captains bullpen. The Loons went on the load the bases and force in a run on a squeeze bunt. From there a double by Jeremy Rathjen cleared the bases and the Loons tied the game at 4-4.

The Captains used a four hit top of the fourth inning and jumped out to the 3-0 lead. In the inning, Eric Haase had an RBI single to get the Captains on the board 1-0. A wild pitch scored run number two and allowed Haase hustle all the way to third base. Joe Sever singled home Hasse and it was 3-0.

After the game was tied, the Captains retook the lead when Erik Gonzalez hit a double to lead off the sixth inning. He eventually made it to third base and scored on an RBI ground out by Martin Cervenka. The Captains led 5-4.

In the seventh inning, the Loons lead off hitter Jose Capellan tripled. He later scored on a RBI ground out to tie the ballgame at five. The Loons got the lead when second basemen Alexis Aguliar singled home Bladimir Franco for the go-ahead run, the score was 6-5, and the Loons never looked back.

Dylan Baker (0-0) started for the Captains and did not get a decision. Baker twirled five innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs, one walk, and one hit batter. Baker struck out seven Loons. Josh Martin (0-1) took the loss for Lake County. Martin pitched two innings and allowed three hits, two runs, one earned, and fanned four. Francisco Valera pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Captains.

Jonathan Martinez (0-0) started for Great Lakes and did not get the decision. Martinez pitched five innings, seven hits, four earned runs, and he struck out three. Miguel Sulbaran (1-0) got the win. He pitched two and two thirds innings, and had four hits, one earned run and six strikeouts. Scott Griggs got the four out save his first of the season.

On Tuesday, Lake County will stay in Midland, Michigan to take on the Great Lakes Loons. Lake County will send RHP Luis Dejesus (0-0, 6.75) to the mound to face RHP Zachary Bird (0-0,0.00) for the Loons. First pitch will be at 6:05 PM from Dow Diamond.
