South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Silver Hawks Give Dragons a Case of the Mondays After the offense took advantage early, starting pitcher Cody Wheeler and reliever Brandon Sinnery combined for a shutout as the South Bend Silver Hawks (3-2) rode a five-run bottom of the first inning to a 6-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons (2-3) on Monday night.

After Wheeler threw a scoreless first inning, the Silver Hawks, the Class-A Affiliate of the National League West leading Arizona Diamondbacks, immediately jumped all over Dayton starter Wandy Peralta (0-1). Centerfielder Breland Almadova led off with a double down the right field line. Second baseman Fidel Pena went back to right field with a ground-rule double over the bullpen wall to plate Almadova. A walk to Brandon Drury and a throwing error by Peralta loaded the bases with nobody out for South Bend. Peralta looked like he was wriggling out of the jam trailing only 1-0 when he retired the next two batters. However, after Peralta allowed one runner to score on a wild pitch, leftfielder Alex Glenn would deliver a clutch two-RBI single to center to extend the lead to 4-0. The inning would be capped off by a Pedro Ruiz RBI single to center field.

The rest of the game belonged to the pitchers, as the offenses took most of the rest of the night off. Wheeler (1-0) threw five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out five. Sinnery earned his first save of the year by completing the final four innings, allowing just two hits and a walk. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the 5th for the Silver Hawks as catcher Roidany Aguila led off the inning with a double. He would then steal home as the back half of a double steal with Glenn swiping second on the play as well.

Glenn was the hitting star for the Silver Hawks. He went three for four with a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Wes Mugarian and Alejandro Chacin combined for seven effective innings of relief for the Dragons but Dayton, a Cincinnati Reds affiliate, could not overcome the Hawks' five-run first inning. The two teams are back in action Tuesday night at 7:05pm in the second game of the three-game series.
