Eagles Gain Separation in Standings with 2-1 Win over Wranglers

Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers, 2-1, in the second game of a three-game set between the teams next to each other in the Western Conference standings. After all three of the game's goals were scored in the first period, the contest turned into a defensive duel between Adam Brown (26 saves) and Joe Fallon (24 saves).

Colorado wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the first frame, starting the scoring just 35 seconds in. Michael Forney forced a turnover just outside his own blue line and started a rush the other way. He entered the offensive zone and sent a pass into the left circle where Chad Costello blasted the game's first shot past Fallon, using the defenseman as a screen.

The Wranglers countered at 5:08 when Robbie Smith's wraparound attempt made its way through the crease where Josh Harris poked it home from the paint. Meanwhile, Las Vegas was building a large shot advantage -- the Eagles went 11 minutes between shots -- thanks in part to being awarded four power plays in the first frame.

Colorado, on the other hand, had just one man advantage in the opening period, but the Eagles used their league-leading power play to re-take the lead just eight seconds into the opportunity. Costello -- the league's reigning MVP -- attracted multiple defenders and found Forney -- an MVP candidate this season -- deep along the left wing. Forney skated into the left circle and snapped off his 34th goal of the season.

Each team registered seven shots in the second stanza, but the standout of the frame was Brown in the Eagles' net. Las Vegas made a strong push in the second half of the period, but the rookie netminder made a series of strong saves to keep the home team up, 2-1, heading into the third period.

The Eagles out-shot the Wranglers, 13-10, in the final frame, but it was their defensive effort that was again most notable. The highlights came midway through the period when rookie defenseman Collin Bowman made a pair of stellar defensive plays on a penalty kill, and in the final moments when Brown came up with a few more stellar stops to cap off his strong night.
