Trenton Titans News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, downed the Cincinnati Cyclones in a shootout, 2-1, (1-0 SO) at home Friday night. Andy Bombach scored the game-winner, and Cal Heeter stopped 35 shots, plus five shootout attempts, to earn the victory in the final meeting between the two clubs. The win was the Titans first against the Cyclones since November 5, 2010, a 5-4 home OT win. They finish the season 1-5-0-1 against the Eastern Conference leaders.
The Titans (27-29-4-4, 62 pts) took the lead on a power play goal late in the first period. Bryan Haczyk took a feed from Bombach at the side of the net and buried it past Michael Houser (15-5-1-1, 36 saves) for his 16 th (9 th PP) goal of the season. Blake Kessel earned the secondary assist on the play. The Titans would take the 1-0 lead to the locker room after 20 minutes of play.
Cincinnati (40-17-5-3, 88 pts) tied the game with a power play goal of their own in the second. Jeremy Tucker tallied at the 11:46 mark after Trenton netminder Cal Heeter (3-2) was called for interference.
Heeter and Houser each came up big in the latter stages of the game, and neither side could break the tie in the third period or the five minute extra session. The goalie duel continued in the shootout, and it took a stellar backhand-forehand move with a top-shelf finish from Andy Bombach to secure the victory for the Titans.
Each power play unit was 1-for-5 on the night, and the Titans power play and PK units remain among the league's best. The power play was the fifth-best, and PK third-best, entering play tonight.
Bombach and Haczyk have each recorded at least one point over their last four games, dating back to a 4-2 win over Elmira on March 7 th . Haczyk has five points (4G, 1A) while the captain has recorded 1 goal and 5 assists during that span.
Despite the loss, Cincinnati clinches a playoff spot, and at least a share of the North division Title.
The Titans are back in action Sunday when the host the Jackals Sunday at 3:05 pm. They then head to Elmira Wednesday to complete the home-and-home before returning the Sun National Bank Center for a pair of meetings with another division rival, the Wheeling Nailers, next Friday and Saturday, both at 7:05 pm.
