Round Rock Express News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Round Rock Express (74-63) offense could not find a rhythm Monday night as the E-Train fell to the Nashville Sounds (62-75) at First Tennessee Park, 5-1. Round Rock only mustered four hits while committing four errors.
Nashville orchestrated a pinch of momentum in the bottom of the third as Sounds CF Craig Gentry lofted a single to right field to start the inning. Express starter Phil Klein crafted back-to-back punch-outs to relieve the pressure, but saw Gentry swipe second to get into scoring position. A fielding error by newly added Express 1B Alex Burg saw 2B Joey Wendle get on base and score Gentry for the first run of the series. Klein recorded his third K of the inning to send the game into the fourth.
The Sounds brought the noise once again in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a single from Nashville SS Andy Parrino that turned into a stand-up triple courtesy of a fielding error by E-Train LF Lewis Brinson. Parrino hustled home seven pitches later on a Gentry sac fly that made the score 2-0 Nashville. Klein used a strikeout and a pop out to get out of the fifth.
Sounds starter Sean Nolin (2-2, 2.97) left the series opener with 4.2 innings pitched, one hit and six Ks after stifling the Round Rock offense.
Klein gave up a single to Wendle that opened the sixth with 3B Brent Morel coming to the plate. Morel popped out to first for out number one, summoning RF Jason Pridie to the batter's box. What looked like a routine pop out to Express 3B Ryan Rua, turned into a single for Pridie that put two on with one out. Sounds DH Rangel Ravelo knocked in his first RBI of the night to bring Wendle across the plate that enlarged the Sounds lead to 3-0. Nashville 1B Max Muncy then connected on a 1-2 pitch from Klein that resulted in a RBI double to add the fourth Nashville run of the night. The double ended Klein's (1-1, 3.12) night after 5.1 innings pitched, six hits, five runs (two earned) and nine strikeouts, calling RHP Francisco Mendoza into the game. Mendoza gave up a sacrifice fly to start his night, but stopped the bleeding with a ground out that left Round Rock down 5-0 heading into the seventh.
Express SS Beamer Weems lit a one-out single to center field that placed runners on the corners for CF Jared Hoying in the top of the eighth. Hoying brought in C Patrick Cantwell from third on a ground out that eliminated Weems at second, but left Hoying on first with the E-Train trailing 5-1. Hoying went on to steal his second base of the night to give him number 18 on the season with Rua at the plate. Nashville reliever Taylor Thompson got Rua to fly out to halt Round Rock's potential surge.
The spurt in the eighth proved to be the only offense of the night for Round Rock as Nashville closer Jim Fuller threw a shutout ninth to deliver the game one victory for the Sounds, 5-1.
The Express and Sounds square off tomorrow night for game two at First Tennessee Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Round Rock sends out RHP Stolmy Pimentel (4-3, 5.49) takes the mound against a Sounds pitcher still to be named.
