Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sean Nolin set the tone in Monday's series opener against Round Rock at First Tennessee Park, helping Nashville cruise to a 5-1 win.
The crowd of 7,459 at First Tennessee Park closed the gap as the Sounds plan to welcome the 15 millionth fan in franchise history. The team will reach the historic milestone with a crowd of at least 4,050 on Tuesday night.
Nolin was making his fourth start following a recent stint on the disabled list and retired the first 12 batters he faced. The left-hander finished with a season-high six strikeouts and never issued a walk with his 76 pitches. The only hit he allowed was a leadoff single in the fifth to Ed Lucas, who was left stranded when Nolin exited following 4 2/3 innings.
The Sounds bounced out to a 1-0 lead with a tally in the third. Craig Gentry extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single to right and stole his team-leading 25th base to land in scoring position. With two away, Joey Wendle hit a sharp grounder that ducked underneath the glove of first baseman Alex Burg and rolled deep enough for Gentry to score.
Nashville doubled its lead by scratching out another run in the fifth. Andy Parrino lined a clean single to left and scooted all the way to third on a two-base error by left fielder Lewis Brinson. In the next at-bat, Gentry collected a sacrifice fly, his 21st RBI this season.
The cushion helped ease any nerves that 21-year-old Victor Veliz may have had in his Triple-A debut. The left-hander's promotion earlier on Monday marked his fourth different level within the Athletics' organization this season. He entered in the fifth inning with two away and a runner on, wiggling around a walk on his way to 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The one-hit performance earned the reliever the win.
The home team moved all in and put up a three-spot in the sixth. The big inning included hits from Wendle, Jason Pridie, Rangel Ravelo and Max Muncy, helping Nashville extended its lead to 5-0 after the frame.
Round Rock acquired its only run in the eighth inning off Taylor Thompson. The right-hander started the inning by walking Brinson, who scored on a groundout later in the frame.
The series between Nashville and Round Rock continues tomorrow with a 7:05 p.m. start at First Tennessee Park. Both teams have yet to name their starters for the Tuesday evening contest.
