Ducks open season with 4-3 shootout win

WEST VALLEY, UT -- Joffrey Lupul scored the deciding goal in the shootout to lift the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks over the Utah Grizzlies, 4-3, Wednesday at the E Center in the season-opener for both teams.

Sheldon Brookbank for Cincinnati and Jon Sim for Utah traded goals in the first round of the shootout, Lupul scored to seal the contest as Cincinnati's first shooter in the second round.

Lupul, a first-round pick by Anaheim in 2002, had a goal and two assists in regulation for Cincinnati, which rallied from three one-goal deficits to improve to 5-3-0-0 all-time in season-openers.

Joel Perrault and Kurtis Foster also scored for the Ducks. Tim Brent chipped in with a pair of assists in his professional debut.

Doug Doull, Sim and Joe Callahan scored for the Grizzlies, who had 12 players selected in the first or second round of an NHL Entry Draft in their lineup, including five first-round picks.

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36 shots in the win for Cincinnati, while former IHL Cyclone Jean-Marc Pelletier stopped 34 shots in the loss.

The Ducks and Grizzlies complete a two-game series Friday at 9:05 p.m. at the E Center.
