Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Heatherly and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 4-0 on Monday night. A crowd of 7,273 was in attendance at Fifth Third Field.
Heatherly (1-1), who had started a game in Fort Wayne against the TinCaps last Wednesday and did not survive the first inning in that contest, bounced back to toss five scoreless frames against the same club to earn the win. He gave up only two hits and no walks with five strikeouts.
The Dayton bullpen, which struggled mightily in a four-game set in Fort Wayne last Monday through Thursday, combined for four scoreless innings. Ryan Campbell worked two innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. He had to pitch out of a tough jam in the seventh after a hitter reached on an error and reached third base with one out. Campbell notched a big strikeout and then got a fly out to end the threat.
Connor Bennett started the eighth inning and gave way to Jesse Stallings with two on and two out. Stallings got a strikeout to end the eighth, and then worked a perfect ninth inning for his first save.
The Dragons took an early 2-0 lead. Mariel Bautista reached on an error with one out in the first inning and scored on a triple by Shard Munroe to make it 1-0. Munroe scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The Dragons added to their lead in the eighth inning. Ernesto Liberatore, in his first game of the season, doubled to right-center field to start the rally. Michael Siani walked, and two batters later, Jay Schuyler lined a double to the fence in left to bring in both runners and make it 4-0.
The Dragons collected seven hits. Munroe was 2 for 4 with a triple, run scored, and an RBI. He is now batting .370 on the year. Miguel Hernandez also had two hits including a double. Schuyler's two-run double raised his RBI total to a team-leading eight on the season.
The shutout was the second of the year for the Dragons. Their home record is 3-2.
Up Next: The Dragons (4-7) meet Fort Wayne (7-5) in the second game of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Jhon De Jesus (1-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.64). De Jesus has not allowed a run in two starts covering 10 innings. Weathers, the son of former Reds reliever David Weathers, was the first round draft pick in 2018 by the parent club of the TinCaps, the San Diego Padres.
