Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Since a pair of one run wins to begin the season against West Michigan, 3-2 and 8-7, the Dayton Dragons (8-0) have been outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 8.2 to one. Tuesday night's series opener against the Swing of the Quad Cities (6-6) was the tightest game the Miami Valley's Team had played since April 7th. The Dragons used clutch two out hitting in the third inning and rode the right arm of Daryl Thompson (WP 2-0) to a 3-0 shutout victory to move to 8-0 and remain the last undefeated team in professional baseball.
Thompson and Swing starter Tyler Herron (LP, 0-2) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with all of the runs coming in the home half of the third inning. With two down and Eddy Rodriguez at first base, Drew Stubbs extended his hitting streak to eight games with a hit and run single that moved Rodriguez to third. Justin Turner doubled to left over the head of Mark Shorey scoring Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead. Chris Valaika followed with a two RBI single to extend his hitting streak to seven, scoring both Stubbs and Turner for a 3-0 Dayton advantage.
It was all pitching for the Dragons from that point on as Thompson completed 6.0 innings of five hit baseball with two strikeouts and one walk to improve to 2-0 on the year, lowering his ERA to 0.82. Marcos Mateo (1.2 innings) and Pedro Viola (SV, 1 - 1.1 innings) blanked the Swing the rest of the way to preserve Dayton's second consecutive home shutout. The Dragons held the top four hitters in the Quad Cities line up (all hitting over .300 entering play Tuesday night) to 1 for 16 (.063).
Dayton left fielder Chris Heisey had his seven game hitting streak come to a close with a 0-3 night. With the South Atlantic League's Augusta Green Jackets losing to the Columbus Catfish 5-1, the Dragons remain the only undefeated team in professional baseball at any level.
Dayton and Quad Cities continue the four game series at Fifth Third Field Wednesday evening at 7 PM. RHP Rafael Gonzalez (1-0, 1.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Dragons, while the Swing sends RHP Mike Schellinger (0-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live, beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM.
