Muldowney, Papelbon, Roquet Pitch Chiefs Past Loons

Midland, MI - The Peoria Chiefs benefited from timely hitting and strong pitching to win their second straight game with a 4-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night. The win kicked of a six game road trip and gets the Chiefs back to .500 at 5-5 on the 2007 season.

After both teams left runners on base in the first inning, the Chiefs got on the board in the second against Loons starter Josh Wall. Yusuf Carter led off with a walk and stole second before Alfred Joseph reached on an infield single. Dylan Johnston was awarded first base on a catchers' interference to load the bases. Jonathon Mota's first base hit of the season scored both Carter and Joseph for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.

A sloppy defensive inning by the Chiefs allowed the Loons to tie the game in the third. With one out, Trayvon Robinson singled to center and advanced to second when Matt Camp's throw back to the infield got away. With two outs, Bridger Hunt hit a grounder to Dylan Johnston and Robinson scored when Johnston's throw to first sailed past Russ Canzler. Josh Bell then tied the game with a broken bat single to center.

Peoria regained the lead in the fourth inning. Wall hit Joseph with a pitch to start the inning and then wild pitched Joseph to second. With one out, Joseph stole third base and Wall hit Mota with a pitch before Matt Camp singled to center to put the Chiefs up 3-2.

Peoria added to their lead against Miguel Sanfler in the seventh. Camp started the inning with a walk and stole second before coming home on a double off the bat of Josh Lansford.

Muldowney (2-1) went six strong innings allowing two unearned runs on six hits. He struck out three to add to his MWL-leading total and did not issue a walk. Jeremy Papelbon threw two innings out of the bullpen allowing an infield hit and striking out four. Rocky Roquet picked up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth in which he struck out two batters.

Billy Muldowney (SP) - The Chiefs opening day starter has gone at least five innings in all three of his starts in 2007. Tonight he allowed two unearned runs on six hits over six innings. He also became the first pitcher in the Midwest league to reach 20 strikeouts on the season and he didn't issue a walk.

Notes... The Chiefs stole a season high five bases in as many attempts...The last time they stole six in a game was April 16, 2003 at Clinton...This was the first game the Chiefs ever played against an affiliate of the LA Dodgers...It leaves the Mets, Phillies, Pirates, Nationals and Rockies as franchises the Chiefs have not faced in their 25 year history though they have played Montreal Expos affiliates before Montreal moved to Washington...Game two of the four game series is set for Wednesday at 7:00 pm EST...The Chiefs will send RH Jose Pina (0-1, 1.80) against Dodgers #2 prospect LH Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 1.23)...The broadcast begins with the pregame show on www.peoriachiefs.com and WOAM 1350 at 5:45 pm Peoria time.
