Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

All the Swing of the Quad Cities gave up on Tuesday night was a three-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning, but that was enough for the Dayton Dragons to stay undefeated with a 3-0 victory at Fifth Third Field.

Quad Cities (6-6) pitched well against the hot-hitting Dragons, who entered the game batting .331 as a team. Dayton (8-0) got a strong pitching performance from starter Daryl Thompson, as the Dragons staff combined to scatter eight hits in the shutout.

Swing starter Tyler Herron blazed through his first two innings of work, retiring the first seven batters he faced before allowing a baserunner. With two outs in the third, however, he ran into trouble the second time through the order.

Drew Stubbs, the eighth overall selection in the 2006 draft, started the two-out rally by fighting off a single into center field that put runners at the corners. Justin Turner followed by ripping a double to left that drove in one run and moved Stubbs to third. Reigning Pioneer League MVP Chris Valaika came to the plate next, and bounced a 1-2 pitch up the middle to bring both runners home. In a flash, three consecutive two-out hits gave the Dragons the decisive 3-0 lead.

That was all that Thompson (2-0) needed, as the righty scattered five hits over six shutout innings for the win. The save went to Pedro Viola (1), who erased a ninth-inning single with a game-ending double play to record the game's final outs.

Quad Cities checked in with multiple hits in the third, fourth, and seventh innings, but failed to bring any of those runners home. Luke Gorsett went 2-for-2 with a walk in the losing effort, while Christian Lopez and Donovan Solano also picked up two hits apiece.

Herron (0-2) pitched well in the game despite taking the loss, though the box score may not reflect it. The hard-throwing 20-year-old fanned five while walking one in four innings of work. The two-out sequence in the third did him in, accounting for three of the five hits he allowed and all three runs.

Brad Furnish piggybacked off Herron's start, holding Dayton to just one hit over three shutout innings. The southpaw struck out four and retired eight in a row to close his outing before Kenny Maiques hurled a scoreless eighth.
