Dayton Dragons News Release

Lansing, MI– The Dayton Dragons (26-34) and Lansing Lugnuts (32-28) played extra baseball on Friday at Oldsmobile Park, completing a suspended game from Thursday night and playing the regularly scheduled Friday night game. Dayton took the suspended game 3-2, while Lansing bounced back to win the second game of the night 4-1.

The completion of the suspended game featured outstanding pitching and the long ball. Chi-Hung Cheng (ND) who was slated to start on Friday for the Lugnuts got the call early to complete Thursday's suspended game. The southpaw struck out seven of the first nine Dragons he faced and nine overall in 6.0 innings, earning a no decision.

Lansing used back-to-back homers from Curtis Thigpen and Eric Nielsen in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. The solo HR's would be all Lansing would get off Jon George (ND), who tossed 4.0 innings of four hit baseball, he struck out three and walked one allowing two runs. The Dragons tied the game in the top of the fifth off Cheng, on a lead off homer from Jeremiah Piepkorn and an RBI groundout from Chad Ziemendorf.

Dayton took the lead in the top of the ninth inning off Jordy Templet (LP, 2-2). Drew Anderson led off the inning with a single and moved from first to third on a hit and run single from B.J. Szymanski. Anderson scored on a sac fly from Piepkorn, giving Dayton a 3-2 lead. Blake Hendley (SV, 5) tossed a one, two, three ninth to pick up the save and nail down the win for Josh Thigpen (WP, 2-1). Thigpen tossed 3.0 innings of one hit shutout baseball with four K's and three walks to pick up the win.

Game number two on the night and of the series featured Dragons starter Homer Bailey (LP, 1-3) and Lansing righty Juan Perez (WP, 4-3). Dayton put five batters on base in the first three innings, but could get nothing going against the Lugnut starter. Bailey was un-hittable through the first three innings allowing only a one out walk to Aaron Mathews.

Lansing drew first blood in the night cap with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Once again, Mathews proved to be a tough out, drawing a leadoff walk from Bailey. A stolen base got the speedster to second base and an RBI double to the gap in right center field by David Hicks brought Mathews home and gave Lansing the 1-0 lead.

Lansing broke the game open with three in the bottom of the fifth, all off Bailey, who appeared to run out of steam. Jason Armstrong picked up an RBI single, Mathews added an RBI triple and the Dragons helped out with a Bradley Key error at third that scored the third run of the inning. The Lugnuts led through five innings 4-0.

Perez tossed 5.0 innings to pick up the win, allowing four hits and one walk. The right hander struck out one Dragon on the night. Bailey tossed 4.2 allowing all four Lansing runs, three of which were earned. Bailey tied a season high with six strikeouts and allowed three walks.

Dayton scored its lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice from Trevor Lawhorn.

1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the third game of the four game series between the Dragons and the Lugnuts at 7:05 PM Saturday night beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The Dragons will send RHP Ramon Ramirez to the mound, while Lansing will counter with RHP Danny Core.
