Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had eight extra base hits and they rallied to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-4 Thursday night. The win kept the Rattlers in first place in the Midwest League's Western Division. Sebastien Boucher had three hits, including a triple and a double, to lead the Rattler offense. Yung Chi Chen had a big two-run triple during a five run Rattler sixth inning.
The game got started after a 1 hour, 59 minute rain delay and Cedar Rapids wasted no time getting on the board. A two-out RBI double by Aaron Peel put the Kernels in front 1-0.
Wisconsin (34-26) matched that run in the bottom of the third inning. Boucher tripled with one out. Oswaldo Navarro followed with a flyball to right field and Boucher beat the throw to the plate to score the tying run.
Cedar Rapids (25-35) took the lead again in the top of the fifth inning. Rattler starter Casey Abrams walked Freddy Sandoval with one out and committed an error with two outs to allow Aaron Peel to reach. Warner Madrigal lined a double off the left field wall to plate both runs and give Cedar Rapids a 3-1 lead. Abrams finished the fifth inning without further incident.
Mike Wilson started the Wisconsin sixth inning with a double. Kernel starter Jesse Smith got the first out of the inning and turned things over to Ronnie Ray. The Rattler offense rolled on Ray. Marshall Hubbard walked and Chen tripled in two runs to tie the game 3-3. Josh Womack chopped a double over the drawn-in infield to give Wisconsin a 4-3 lead. Boucher and Asdrubal Cabrera had RBI singles later in the inning.
Matt Tuiasosopo hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. The home run was his first since April 20 and put the Rattlers in front 7-3.
Cedar Rapids got a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Richard Giannotti.
The Kernels put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Wisconsin closer Craig James entered the game and got Madrigal to fly out to right to end the game.
The Rattlers remained one game in front of the Clinton LumberKings in the Midwest League Western Division first half race. Clinton rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Kane County 4-3. Third place Quad Cities dropped two games off the pace with a 6-3 loss at home to South Bend.
Ivan Blanco pitched two scoreless innings for the Rattlers and got his second win of the season.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night. Rattler right handed reliever Chad Fillinger (2-2, 2.41ERA) gets a spot start. The Kernels plan to send righty Karl Gelinas (2-4, 4.14). Game time is 7:05pm.
