South Bend Silver Hawks News Release


South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks won't have any problem recognizing may of the players in the eastern division clubhouse when the All-Star game is played in Peoria on June 21. The Hawks, who have been in first place for the bulk of the first half in the Midwest League's eastern division, were rewarded as a team and as individuals with the announcement of 11 players making the eastern division's All-Star team.

Four pitchers and seven position players made the team, dwarfing the number of Silver Hawks making the team last season in Cedar Rapids (6).

Players for the Silver Hawks heading to Peoria include:

Emilio Bonifacio - leads the team in stolen bases (23) Agustin Murillo - team leader in batting average (.332) Carlos Gonzales - leads the Midwest League in RBI Javier Brito - hitting (.331) and has fanned only 19 times in 145 at-bats this season Alberto Gonzalez - has yet to commit an error this season and is hitting (.312) Jereme Milons - leads the Silver hawks in triples (4) Allen Mottram - leads the Midwest League in slugging percentage (.612) Josh Perrault - has struck out 25 batters and walked only five this season A.J. Shappi - tied for the league lead in wins (9) Ross Ohlendorf - owns a strikeout to walk ratio of better than 3:1 (68/20) Matt Elliott - leads the bullpen in saves and is third in the Midwest League in saves. The Silver Hawks finish the first half of the season with four road games against the Swing of the Quad Cities, before returning home to play seven games against the Dayton Dragons and West Michigan Whitecaps.

Week Ahead

Monday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. - Budweiser Dollar Monday with ABC 57 and B100 with a game against the Dayton Dragons. Enjoy $1 tickets, $1 hot dogs, $1 Pepsi products and $1 beers!

Tuesday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. - TCU Kids Club night with U93. All kids club members will receive free admission with their membership card. $1 of each ticket sold goes to U93's Roofsit. Also, the first 400 fans through the gate receive a free United States flag.

Tuesday is also Book Drive Night as well as Military Appreciation Night. Bring a book to donate and you get a free ticket to the night's game or show your military ID and receive a ticket for $1.

Wednesday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. - Pepsi Wednesday featuring buy one get one free tickets with a Pepsi product proof of purchase.

Thursday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m. - Ultra Thursday with WB 25 & 103.9 The Bear, featuring live post-game entertainment (Gretchen's Revenge) with the Michelob Ultra Concert Series and a special edition of Launch-a-Ball, where you could win $1,000! Thursday is also Granger Community Night and Bud Limo Tour.

Teacher Appreciation Night - All teachers get in free with vouchers. Registered teachers have a chance to win a trip for two to San Francisco (see to the right for more details).

Saturday is also Scout Night at the Cove (see below) as well as Edwardsburg Community Night.

Scout Night at The Cove

Scout Night at The Cove is just around the corner. On June 18th after the ballgame you can camp under the stars on the field with your scout group. Don't miss all of the fun at The Cove. Call a group representative for all the details at 235-9988.

Teacher Appreciation Night at The Cove

Thursday, June 16th is Teacher Appreciation Night at the Cove. Each teacher that presents their voucher at the ticket window will get two free reserved seat tickets. If the voucher is redeemed by June 9th, they will be entered into a drawing to win a trip for two to San Francisco.

Ten finalists and their guests will have their suitcases packed with a limo waiting to wisk one of them away to Chicago for a one night stay before leaving the following day for San Francisco. They will stay three nights at the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf located 2 blocks from San Francisco's famous Cable Cars. You will be given money to visit many of the wonderful attractions San Francisco has to offer.

Your flight will depart San Francisco on June 20th and arrive in Chicago that evening. There you will be met by a private limo to bring you back home.

Sports Fest 2005

Sports Fest is a weeklong showcase of high school all-star games in nine sports featuring more than 500 top athletes from northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan. The nine sports that will be on display include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, baseball, softball and volleyball. Players will be selected by voting through the areas high school coaches. Teams are designated according to four geographic regions. Those regions are Michigan for all the Michigan athletes participation, Metro that includes the Penn, Mishawaka, St. Joseph, Marian and South Bend community Schools, Indiana East and Indiana West. Serving as the boundary for Indiana East and West is U.S. 31.

Format of the weeklong showcase consists of each team playing a minimum of one semi-final game and the two teams that win will be invited back for a championship game. No consolation games will be played.

Sports Fest 2005 Kicks-off on Sunday, June 19 at Coveleski Regional Stadium with opening ceremonies honoring the athletes and fireworks. The athletes begin competition on Monday, June 20 and end the weeklong series of games on Friday, June 24.

Sports Fest is a collaborative effort between the South Bend Tribune, 22WSBT-TV, UPN Michiana and the WSBT Radio Stations.
