Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 9, 2005) - The Ft. Wayne Wizards (33-25) scored three unearned runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but Lachlan Dale's error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the Burlington Bees (28-31) to escape with an 8-7 win tonight at Community Field. The teams combined to commit six errors in the game and score five unearned runs.

The Bees got out to an early lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Geraldo Valentin led off with a single, went to second on an error by Colt Morton, and scored when Sean Kazmar booted a ground ball off the bat of Damaso Espino to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Rusty Brown hit a laser over the wall in left off of Wizards' starter Joel Santo for his third homer of the season. Jared Ellis walked with two outs and scored on a single by Ed Lucas to give the Bees a 3-0 lead.

The Wizards tied the game against Luis Cota in the third. A walk, two singles, two more walks, and a sacrifice fly plated three runs to pull the Wizards even. In the top of the fifth, Ft. Wayne took its first lead. Tom Vincent led off with a double and scored on a singly by Kazmar. Cota came out after five and allowed four runs on eight hits and walked five while striking out three.

The Bees came back in the bottom of the sixth. Brown hit a ball that Brett Dowdy made a diving stop on at third, but his throw skipped past Dale in the dirt, allowing Brown to go to second. Eddie Solis knocked him in with a single to center to tie the game at four. After a base hit by Kenard Springer, Santo went to a 2-0 count on Ellis and was taken out mid at-bat in favor of Jonathan Ellis. Jared Ellis completed the sacrifice bunt and Valentin laced a double down the right field line to drive in both runs and put the Bees back on top 6-4. The Bees added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out single by Espino to drive in Lucas and make it 7-4.

Justin Sherman took over for Cota in the sixth and didn't allow a hit through three innings. He came back out to start the ninth and allowed an infield single to Chris Kolkhorst who went to third when Brown dropped a throw from shortstop on a slow grounder by Dowdy. After a strikeout, Colt Morton reached on a fielder's choice as Kolkhorst scored to make it 7-5. Brian Fryer pinch-ran at first and scored as Vincent ripped a double down the left field line. The relay throw from Lucas to second went over Solis and rolled all the way into the Wizards bullpen, allowing Vincent to score and tie the game. Chad Blackwell came in and struck out Dale to end the inning.

Ricky Steik took over in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the first two batters, but Springer singled to center and Ellis walked to bring Valentin to the plate who was already 3-4 on the night. Valentin hit a grounder between first and second. Dale ranged over from first and had the ball go off of his foot roll out into right field allowing Springer to come in with the game-winner. Valentin was credited with his season-high fourth hit, but no RBI as the Bees won for the 11th time in their final at-bat this year. Steik (0-2) suffered the loss. Blackwell (5-1) picked up the win and now leads the team.

The Bees and Wizards will play a double-header tomorrow night starting at 6:00 at Community Field. RH Patrick Green (3-4, 4.01) will start game one for the Bees and RH Greg Atencio (2-2, 4.26) in game two. RH Luke Steidlmayer (6-2, 1.90) will start for the Wizards and RH Vern Sterry (2-2, 5.35) for the Wizards. The gates will open at 5:00 for a TGI Bud Night and the start of Ft.
