Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
A five-inning pitcher's duel turned into a rout Friday night, as the Swing fell to South Bend, 9-1, at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Silver Hawks blew open a close game with nine runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including a three-run homer and a grand slam.
With Wisconsin and Clinton both rained out Quad Cities (32-29) dropped a half game to each, falling 2.5 games behind first-place Wisconsin, and 1.5 games in back of Clinton for the final playoff spot. Both teams will play doubleheaders tomorrow.
After five innings of scoreless baseball, South Bend (37-24) broke things open in the top of the fourth. Dennis Dove hit Jereme Milons to open up the inning, and Agustin Murillo then singled back up the middle. After a strikeout Javier Brito singled in the game's first run,and one out later Dove was replaced by lefty Jeff Randazzo. The first batter he faced, however, was up to the challenge. After taking three consecutive balls, Mark Reynolds looked at a strike before belting the 3-1 pitch beyond the left field fence for a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, Randazzo fanned the first two batters of the inning before running into trouble. He then walked Milons and Murillo, before Carlos Gonzalez drove in a run with a flare single to right field. Quinton Robertson then came on in relief, but after walking Brito was taken deep by Cesar Nicolas for the big blow of the night â a grand slam that gave the Silver Hawks a 9-0 lead on the strength of eight two-out runs.
The Swing tried to fight back in the eighth, but it was far too little far too late. Brady Toops led things off with a first-pitch single, and with one away Juan Lucena ripped a double to left to put Quad Cities on the scoreboard. Lucena was 3-for-4 on the night, and continues to stay hot. After a 2-for-26 April, the shortstop is hitting at a .386 clip through May and early June.
Dove (5-5) picked up the loss after 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. After five strong innings, he was touched for one run and left two men on base before leaving the ballgame.
For the Silver Hawks A.J. Shappi (10-1) became the league's first 10-game winner with the victory, tossing 7.2 one-run innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.
UP NEXT: The Swing and Silver Hawks continue the series Saturday night, when the Swing send Phillip Andersen (0-1, 4.09) to the mound against lefty Kellen Raab (2-1, 4.99). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:45.
PROMOTION: The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday night will receive Albert Pujols bobblehead dolls courtesy of US Cellular, KLJB Fox 18, Mediacom, and WKBF AM-1270. The doll is one of two being given away at John O'Donnell Stadium this season, with a Johan Santana bobblehead doll giveaway scheduled for July 23.
