West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

BATTLE CREEK - Luis Sabino led the Whitecaps offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with 5 RBI in a 13-8 victory over Southwest Michigan. A three run triple by Sabino broke the game open during West Michigan's six-run fifth. Sabino also scored on the play thanks to a throwing error by centerfielder Fernando Perez. The Devil Rays actually had two leads in the early going. Perez scored on a sacrifice fly by John Jaso in the first for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Brent Dlugach led off with a triple, then came home on a Sabino single to tie the game, 1-1.

Southwest Michigan took a 2-1 advantage in the fourth on a single by Tommy Nichols. West Michigan tied the game on an RBI single by Jeff Frazier. Two batters later, Dlugach drew a bases loaded walk to put the Whitecaps on top for good, 3-2. After the triple and error for Sabino, West Michigan held a 7-2 lead.

Dusty Ryan went deep for the Whitecaps in the sixth, extending West Michigan's home run streak to six consecutive games. Jaso blasted his Midwest League-leading 11th home run for Southwest Michigan in the fifth. Perez expanded his league lead in stolen bases by swiping two bags in the first three innings for a total of 28 on the year.

The Whitecaps tacked on five more runs in the eighth, thanks in large part to a pair of Devil Rays errors. That rally opened the lead to 13-3. Matt Righter pitched six innings as the starter and allowed three runs on five hits to earn the win. Dan Konecny tossed two shutout innings of middle relief, which led to a ten-run lead going to the bottom of the ninth.

However, Jay Sborz pitched just a third of an inning and surrendered five runs, which cut the lead in half. Sborz was charged with three earned runs. He faced eight batters and endured a pair of errors and a passed ball before Ed Clelland came on to record the final two outs of the game against consecutive hitters.
