From the Notes
LAST NIGHT: With first pitch temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, the Tribe and Chiefs admirably completed seven innings of play as Indy won the series opener, 4-2. Nick Kingham tossed six innings of two-run ball, and every Indians position player recorded at least one hit. Kevin Kramer paced the Tribe with two knocks from the two-hole, and Austin Meadows and Jose Osuna notched run-scoring doubles in the triumph. Osuna's two-bagger extended his hitting streak to eight games, and it proved to be the game-winning knock as Meadows raced around the bases from first to break a 2-2 deadlock. After the Indians added one insur-ance run in the sixth, Johnny Hellweg pitched around a two-out single in the home half of the seventh for his third save in as many chances.
CRAZY EIGHTS: Tribe 3B/OF Jose Osuna is riding an eight-game hitting streak to start the season, batting .333 (9-for-27) with four doubles, one home run and five RBI during the stretch. He has also walked five times against just five strikeouts. He is one of four players in the International League with a hitting streak of eight-plus games this season.
KINGHAM ROLLS AGAIN: Nick Kingham, named the International League Player of the Week on Monday, continued his roll in winter-like conditions Tuesday evening at Syracuse. He yielded a pair of second-inning runs on four hits but regained his composure to retire the final eight and 13 of the last 15 batters he faced. He improved to 2-0 in three starts this year while keeping his ERA at a tidy 1.59 (3 ER/17.0 IP).
LUPLOW SNAPS SMALL SLUMP: Tribe outfielder Jordan Luplow snapped a brief 0-for-11 slide with a one-out triple in the sixth inning last night. He scored moments later on a Jacob Stallings RBI single through a drawn-in infield. Luplow hadn't recorded a hit since his go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning on April 8 vs. Columbus in a 5-3 win at Victory Field. The triple was also his first extra-base hit of the 2018 season.
BALL IN PLAY: The Indians' offense has struck out just 53 times through nine games (5.8 Ks per Game), the lowest total among all IL teams. The Tribe are batting .280 (83-for-296) as a club, tied for the best mark in the league.
AWESOME IN APRIL: Indy's Game 1 starter today, Tyler Eppler, has excelled in the month of April over the last three seasons. Since the 2016 campaign, he is 4-3 with a 2.41 ERA (15 ER/56.0 IP) over 10 starts combined spanning the Double- and Triple-A levels. He hasn't allowed a run in 9.2 frames this year. Last year he posted a 12.0-inning scoreless streak to start the season, the longest by a Tribe pitcher to open a season since Andy Oliver had a 14.0-inning scoreless streak to start his 2013 campaign.
2017 TEAM MVP DOING THINGS: Christopher Bostick batted .294 (143-for-486) in 2017, the fourth-highest average among IL qualifiers. This year the 25-year-old has picked up where he left off, owning a .346 average (9-for-26) through seven games played. He currently ranks 10th in batting among IL qualifiers.
