ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD: The RailRiders have lost back-to-back games for the first time this year and need a win today to finish with a winning record on their first 2018 road trip. After today, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will not play a game further south than Lehigh Valley until a trip to Lousiville in late May. The next swing away from Moosic lasts three days before a five-game trip to Pawtucket and Syracuse from May 5-9. Over six games on the opening homestand, the RailRiders allowed 20 runs. Through six games on this trip, the club has surrendered 29 runs.
TOP HONORS: Gleyber Torres was honored by the International League on Monday as its Player of the Week for April 5-15. The infielder appeared in all ten games, batting .385 with 15 hits over 39 at-bats with one home runs and ten runs batted in. He started nine games and was used as a pinch hitter in the other. His 22 total bases are tied for second in the league while his ten runs batted in are second behind teammate Abiatal Avelino.
HOMECOMING FOR HALE: David Hale makes his third start of the season today. The right-hander was born 44 miles west of Lawrenceville. Hale attended The Walker School in Marietta, where he was an infielder for three years prior to pitching his senior season. He went on to play college ball at Princeton before being selected by Atlanta in the third round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.
TWO MINUS ONE: Luis Cessa was optioned and Shane Peterson was outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Both players were added to the roster on Monday, though Cessa was recalled by New York again on Tuesday. Rashad Crawford was transferred to Trenton and Paul Young was transferred to Extended Spring Training to initially create space for Cessa and Robinson. Crawford hit .333 over six games for Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre.
NEW FACE: Cesar Diaz was transferred from Extended Spring Training on Tuesday when Luis Cessa was recalled. Diaz was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2013 and has already played for Tampa and Trenton this season. The outfielder had not played above A-ball prior to 2018.
STREAKING: Kyle Higashioka has hit safely in all eight games he has played in this season. The catcher had one hit in each of his first six games, two in Sunday's rain-shortened game at Charlotte and double in the first inning last night. Higashioka is hitting .333 with two home runs and five batted in to start the season.
STOP AND GO: Abiatal Avelino's seven-game hitting streak was snapped last night, but he walked to extend his on-base streak to eight straight games.
OFF THE RAILS: Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre has gone 42-26 against Gwinnett dating back to the 2009 campaign when the Richmond Braves moved to Georgia... Abiatal Avelino had seven runs batted in the Charlotte series and leads the International League with 12 RBI this year. The infielder drove in a career-best five runs on Thursday in the win at Charlotte... Prior to Sunday's RailRiders game, the Yankees transferred infielder Daniel Barrios to Extended Spring Training and added right-handed pitcher Paul Young from Extended Spring.
