Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Salem, Va. - In a scoreless game in the ninth inning, Ryan Dorow led off with a solo home run to left field to lift the Woodies over the Red Sox, 2-0, and take a two games to none lead in the series.
Tyler Phillips started the ballgame for the Wood Ducks, and for the third straight start did not give up a run. He worked seven innings giving up six hits and a walk, while striking out eight. He threw 87 pitches (60 strikes), and stranded seven men on base, on the night.
Meanwhile Salem (4-8) starter Kutter Crawford also pitched well. He worked 5.2 scoreless, giving up four hits and two walks, but striking out eight. He exited with two men on base and two out in the sixth, but Andrew Politi came in to strand both runners on his way to 1.1 scoreless out of the Salem bullpen.
The Woodies (9-4) squandered a good chance in the eighth, after Eric Jenkins and Leody Taveras led off with back to back bunt singles. However, Down East came through in the ninth against Jake Cosart (loss, 0-1). Following Dorow's blast, Clay Middleton worked a one-out walk in his first game played this season. Bubba Thompson then pinch ran for him, and scored when Eric Jenkins doubled to right-center two batters later, increasing the lead to 2-0.
Cosart worked two innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two.
Emmanuel Clase (win, 1-0) worked around a walk and a hit in the eighth inning, and stayed on for the ninth, rolling a double play ball to end the game. Clase went two innings, giving up two hits and a walk, striking out a pair in his first victory of the season.
The Wood Ducks and Red Sox square off in the series finale tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Salem left-hander Jhonathan Diaz will get the start, while the Wood Ducks have yet to name their starter for the ballgame. The broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online on 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
