Two Big Innings Propel Keys to Series Win
April 16, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Frederick Keys (5-7) used two innings of three runs or more to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2-11) 8-2 on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Park. Ryan Ripken hit a three-run home run in the ninth and finished with three RBIs, while Brenan Hanifee earned his first Carolina League win on the mound.
Frederick scored its first five runs with two outs. In the fourth, Zach Jarrett walked with two outs, to put men at first and second for Trevor Craport. On the first pitch, he drove home J.C. Escarra, while Jarrett advanced to third and Craport moved to second on a throwing error by D.J. Wilson in center.
Jean Carrillo followed with a two-run double off Ryan Kellogg to make it 3-0 Keys and Ripken concluded the scoring with an RBI single. In the fourth, the visitors produced five hits and sent eight to bat.
Tyler Payne got one run back for the Pelicans in the bottom of the fourth, singling home Wilson from third. That would be the only blemish against Hanifee (1-1) on the night. Tossing five innings, the right-hander allowed only two hits to go with two walks and four strikeouts in a winning effort.
In the sixth, the two sides exchanged single runs. A double steal of home by Craport made it 5-1 Keys, while the Pelicans scored on a Carlos Sepulveda single bringing home Zach Davis from second.
The Pelicans had a golden chance for runs in the eighth following a single and two walks by Francisco Jiménez, but the right-hander induced a 1-2-3 double play to keep it a three-run Keys lead. A half inning later, Ripken hit a three-run blast off Ben Hecht after Craport and Carrillo both reached again. The four-RBI effort was Ripken's biggest since last May 30 when he had five RBIs against Kannapolis.
Kellogg (1-1) suffered the loss for Myrtle Beach allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings. Jiménez picked up the save thanks to two scoreless innings.
Frederick concludes its roadtrip on Wednesday night and will go for a three-game sweep of the Pelicans. Right-hander Michael Baumann (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Keys against Pelicans left-hander Bryan Hudson (0-0, 3.60). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn app starting at 6:50.
The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Thursday, May 18 when Salem comes to town. Homestand highlights include Mystery Night, Star Wars Day and Easter Sunday.
