'Dogs put streak to rest

Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Norwich, CT)- Facing the Eastern League's ERA leader, the Sea Dogs (41-32) wasted no time asserting their offensive muscle Monday night, beating Connecticut (34-40) 5-3, to begin a four-game series at Dodd Stadium. The win is the‘Dogs second straight and their 6th in seven games with the Defenders.

Portland started the scoring right away in the first inning against right-hander Joey Martinez (4-6). Bubba Bell walked in front of Ryan Khoury's single. Then, Jeff Corsaletti smoked a double to straight-away centerfield to score Bell and Khoury and give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. The RBI's were the 36th and 37th on the season for Corsaletti, moving him into third place on the team behind leader Aaron Bates (42) and Bell (40). The two runs allowed by Martinez snapped a 19-inning scoreless streak and were the first earned runs he had given up in 32.1 innings.

Portland would score two more runs in the second against Martinez. With one out, Mickey Hall singled to center followed by an Iggy Suarez infield single to the shortstop. After a passed ball by Connecticut catcher Adam Witter, Bell drove in Hall with a sacrifice fly to right. Khoury (3 hits) would make it 4-0 with an RBI-single to right, scoring Suarez.

Corsaletti would come to the plate again and deliver the game's scariest moment: a line-drive, infield single off the right arm of Martinez that literally knocked Martinez out of the game. His final line would read 1.2 innings, four earned runs on six hits and a walk. Once Martinez left, the Dogs bats went quiet until the 7th inning.

Brooks McNiven retired 14 straight before allowing a single, a stolen base, and another RBI single by Khoury to make it 5-1 after seven innings.

Matt Goodson (4-4) earned the win with a nice rebound effort. He went five shutout innings after allowing 12 earned runs over his last two starts. Goodson gave up just two hits and while walking two and striking out four.

Beau Vaughan retired all four batters faced to earn his seventh save in nine opportunities. Daniel Haigwood allowed one run over 1.1 IP and Chad Rhoades yielded two runs in 1.1 IP on three hits.

Connecticut's Ben Copeland finished 2-for-4, 2 RBI on a double and a triple. Carlos Sosa knocked in the game's final run with an RBI single.

The two teams play game two of their series on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium beginning at 6:35 PM. Catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 6:10 PM. RHP Michael Bowden (6-3, 2.20) will face RHP Adam Cowart (5-5, 3.64).
