Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Altoona Curve opened a seven-game road trip in losing fashion Monday evening, as the Binghamton Mets scored all five of their runs off three home runs to claim a 5-2 win at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York.
The loss ends the Curve's modest three-game winning streak, which came as part of a weekend series sweep of the Bowie Baysox at Blair County Ballpark. Altoona (33-41) entered Monday's series lidlifter in Binghamton having recorded back-to-back shutout wins to close out the Bowie series. Binghamton improved to 42-33 with the victory.
Altoona starter Josh Hill allowed each of the three homers and all five B-Mets' runs to suffer his team-leading eighth loss. Hill (4-8) worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, while striking out five batters in the contest.
Mets' first baseman Nick Evans hit the key home run in the contest, drilling a go-ahead, three-run home run as part of a four-run fifth inning, which gave Binghamton a 5-2 lead. Left fielder Mike Carp, the Eastern League's second-leading hitter entering Monday's action, immediately followed Evans' blast with a homer of his own to cap the scoring.
Caleb Stewart hit the first of the three Binghamton longballs, ending the Curve pitching staff's string of 26 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, which dated back to the first inning of Friday's 2-1 win over Bowie. The scoreless streak of 26 1/3 consecutive innings fell only two innings shy of a club record set from July 19-22, 2001.
Offensively, Altoona scored its runs in the second and fifth innings on RBI singles by Luis Cruz and Jonel Pacheco, respectively. Chris Duffy, playing in his eighth game with Altoona on his major league injury rehab assignment, went 2-for-3 and was on base four times in the contest. Jason Delaney went 3-for-4, while Brad Corley singled in the third inning and went 1-for-4 overall to extend his team-high hitting streak to eight games.
Right-hander Salvador Aguilar (8-1) held the Curve to two runs over 6 2/3 innings to earn his eighth win for Binghamton. He is now tied for the Eastern League lead in wins. Right-hander Eddie Kunz notched his 18th save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Curve and B-Mets will continue their four-game set Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. from NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton. Altoona will send lefty Corey Hamman (3-6, 3.59) to the mound against Mets' right-hander Tobi Stoner (0-0, 1.64). Fans can hear all the action on flagship station Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:50 p.m.
