Six out of Seven Ain't Bad...The Aeros were denied in their quest for a perfect road trip yesterday afternoon, falling to Reading 6-2 after taking the first six games of the two-city jaunt. RHP Kevin Dixon surrendered three solo home runs but kept Akron in contention while working into the eighth inning, but the offense couldn't capitalize on 10 hits and five walks in the game, stranding 14 runners on the base paths. 2B Josh Rodriguez, DH Stephen Head and 1B Matt Whitney all had two hits on the day. The loss snapped Akron's franchise-record 11-game road winning streak; the previous record was eight consecutive road wins set in 1992 when the team was still based in Canton.
Crowe Honored...Akron OF Trevor Crowe was named Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week today, the fourth Aero to be honored with a weekly award this season. Crowe hit .464 (13-28) last week with four doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and eight RBI while hitting in all six games. The former University of Arizona standout has collected four straight multi-hit games, scored a run in 10 straight contests, and has raised his batting average to a season-high .281 entering play tonight. His eight RBI in the last four games equaled his season output from his first 29 games.
Double Trouble...Crowe hasn't been the only Aero seeing the ball well of late, as fellow outfielder Stephen Head went 8-11 (a .727 batting average) with four doubles in the final three games against Reading. His performance in Saturday's double header was a sight to behold, as the native of Raymond, MS reached base all eight times he came to the plate in the two games. Head went 4-4 with a home run in game one, then doubled twice and drew a pair of walks in the nightcap. His run finally came to an end yesterday afternoon when he grounded out in his first at-bat.
The Bronson Effect...Since OF Bronson Sardinha arrived from Class AAA Buffalo, the Aeros have been a different team. Akron was 24-23 and six games out of first place when Sardinha came down on May 27th, but since then the Aeros have gone 21-5 (a preposterous .808 winning percentage) and sit in first place by four games. The native of Kailua, HI has certainly done his part to contribute to the club's success, hitting .276 and collecting 24 RBI in 24 games.
A Done Deal...The Aeros and Indians announced today that they have reached an agreement to extend the Player Development Contract for the maximum length of four years, ensuring that Akron will remain Cleveland's Double-A affiliate through the 2012 season. The Aeros, who have never known a Major League parent club other than the Indians since the franchise moved to Canton in 1989, are currently in their 20th season as a Tribe affiliate.
