Martinez Named Pitcher of the Week

NORWICH, CT- Coming off some impressive starts in the past few weeks, Joey Martinez was named the Eastern League Bank of America Player of the Week ending June 22nd.

Martinez has pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings and 32 innings without allowing an earned run which dates back to May 26th vs. Harrisburg during the first inning. He is the first Defenders pitcher to claim the title this season. He joins fellow teammate Ben Copeland and former teammate Travis Ishikawa, who was recently promoted to Triple-A Fresno to hold the honor this season. The Defenders welcome the Portland Sea Dogs, Class AA Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox into Dodd Stadium for a four game series starting tonight at 6:35pm. Joseph Martinez, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Connecticut Defenders, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 22nd. Martinez, who is a native of South Orange, New Jersey, made one start for the Defenders last week and had a 0.00 ERA. In his lone appearance of the week the 25-year old faced the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Wednesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium and pitched seven shutout innings and struck out four batters while surrendering only two hits and one walk to lead the Defenders to a 9-0 victory. With his performance the 6'3", 185 lb. hurler lowered his ERA to 1.73, which leads the league. Martinez is also ranked fourth in the league in WHIP (1.13) and is holding opposing batters to a .233 average in 78 innings of work this season. Joseph was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 12th round of the 2005 draft after posting a record of 9-3 with 99 strikeouts in 13 starts during his senior season at Boston College.
