Martinez ends streak in loss to Sea Dogs
June 23, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- On a dreary, muggy evening at Dodd Stadium, the Defenders dropped their first of four contests against the Portland Sea Dogs by a final of 5-3.
Joey Martinez, fresh off of being named the Bank of America Pitcher of the Week, took the hill for Connecticut. Martinez hadn't allowed an earned run in more than in 30 innings and hadn't allowed a run, earned or unearned in 19. But, it didn't take long for the Sea Dogs to break that up.
Jeff Corsaletti's two-run double in the first gave Portland an early 2-0 advantage as Martinez' streak ended quickly.
The Sea Dogs added two more in the second on four base hits as Martinez' struggles continued. To add insult to injury, Martinez would take a line drive off the bat of Corsaletti off his right bicep. The batted ball would force Bien Figueroa's hand as Martinez left the game for pre-cautionary reasons. After an inning and half, the Defs were down 4-0 and a starting pitcher.
Connecticut would crack the scoreboard in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Ben Copeland to shrink the lead to 4-1 as Antoan Richardson crossed the plate.
Portland quickly got a run back in the seventh as Ryan Khoury laced a single to shallow right field to score Iggy Suarez from second as the lead pushed to 5-1.
The Defs finally got a rally going in the eighth as Richardson led off with a single. Ben Copeland drove Richardson home with his fourth triple in as many days to make it 5-2. Carlos Sosa would follow with a laser beam single of his own to right to score Copeland as the advantage shrunk to 5-3. The rally would end there as the next three Defender batters would go down in order.
Bo Vaughn shut the door on the Defenders as he retired the side in order in the ninth as he picked up save number seven.
The Defenders and Sea Dogs will squabble on Tuesday at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are available for the game and the remainder of the series against the AA affiliate of the Red Sox at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
