Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs survived a weather delay of an hour and 12 minutes Wednesday night, beating the St. Paul Saints 7-4 at Haymarket Park. The win pulls Lincoln to within 4.5 games of St. Paul in the North Division of the American Association.
St. Paul actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Lincoln came roaring back in the bottom half. Saints emergency starter Brian Whinnery (0-3), who took the place of an injured Justin Lord just hours before game time, put the first two Saltdog hitters on base, then gave up a monster three-run home run to Dustin Yount. The first five Lincoln batters reached base in the frame, and the Dogs ended the inning with a 4-2 lead. Lincoln tacked on another run in the next frame, ending Whinnery's night after just two innings.
Lincoln maintained that lead into the fourth inning, when a tornado warning in the area halted the game for over an hour. Following the delay, Saltdogs starter Josh Kauten was replaced by R.D. Spiehs (2-1), who had been scheduled to start the series finale on Thursday. Spiehs allowed two runs in his three innings of work, letting the Saints pull within a run, but did enough to earn his second win of the season.
The Saltdogs put the game away in the bottom of the seventh, when Eduardo Rios cracked a two-run homer to set the final margin. Jason Jarvis struck out the side in the eighth, and Nate Staggs pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
Yount finished the night 2-for-3 with the home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Rios and Mario Delgado also had two hits each for Lincoln. Anthony Contreras extended his hitting streak to 16 games, with Yount and Delgado reaching six-game hitting streaks and Shawn McGill stretching his hitting streak to eight games.
The Saltdogs and Saints play the finale of their three-game series Thursday night at 7:05. Charlie Ruud is expected to make the start for St. Paul, while Lincoln's starter has yet to be determined.
