Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries used a late rally to top the Wichita Wingnuts, 9-7, on a rain-soaked Wednesday night at the Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries were aided by two long balls from Beau Torbert, who upped his season home run total to five.

Wichita took an early lead in the top of the first when Michael Thompson reached on an error by Tim Hutting. David Gates followed with his fourth home run of the season, and The Wingnuts held an early two-run lead after their half of the first.

The Birds used their half of the first two score three of their own, including one on the first of Torbert's home runs. After Torbert halved the Wichita lead, Grant Richardson single and Josh Patton walked, putting two on base for Ben Van Iderstine. Van Iderstine doubled to the right-center gap to score Richardson and Patton to go up 3-2.

Wichita scored runs in the each of the next two innings. Brenan Herrera hit his second homer of the season, a second inning solo shot, and in the fourth inning Kevin Hooper scored on a groundout by Thompson. Wichita took a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the third.

The Birds would knot the score at four in their half of the third after Will Smith walked and advanced to second on a Richardson single. Smith scored on a Patton single up the middle for the 4-4 tie after three innings.

The Canaries took the lead in the fourth. Paul Smyth was hit by a pitch, and Tim Hutting followed with a bunt to move the runner over. An error on Wichita starter Justin Young allowed Hutting to second safely, and Smyth to third. That set the stage for Kennard Bibbs to deliver a two-run single and give the Canaries a 6-4 lead.

Wichita would tie the game in the sixth inning when Felipe Del Rosario doubled down the right field line with the bases loaded to plate two. After six the score was deadlocked, 6-6.

In the seventh inning Torbert launched his second homer of the game to give the Birds a 7-6 lead they would never look back from. The Canaries got another in the seventh on a bases loaded walk by Smyth and one more in the eighth on a single by Patton. Wichita managed one run in the ninth, but Kris Regas closed the door on Wichita's chances with the final score settling at 9-7.

Mark Roberts (1-0) picked up the win in relief, Richard Salazar (0-1) suffered the loss, and Kris Regas picked up his league-leading ninth save of the season.

The Canaries go for the sweep in the three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The evening's promotion will be a salute to the 25th Anniversary of the Final Episode of M.A.S.H. presented by Modern Woodmen of America.
