Cats claim third straight with 10-4 victory

The Fort Worth Cats scored six times in the second inning en route to a 10-4 win over Pensacola on Wednesday night at Pelican Park.

The win was the Cats' third in a row and gave them sole possession of first place in the American Association South with a 14-11 record.

Fort Worth jumped on top with a two-run first inning that included a sacrifice fly by Jake Gautreau. In the second, the Cats scored six times for an 8-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a Cameron Blair two-run double and Jake Gautreau's third homer of the year, a three-run shot to left. It was the second night in a row the Cats produced a six-run second inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Pelicans got onto the scoreboard on an RBI double by Francisco Leandro. After the Cats scored two more in the fifth, Pensacola would respond with three in the bottom of the fifth to close the Cats lead to 10-4.

Pedro Flores extended his perfect record on the season to 5-0 as he went six innings and permitted four runs on five hits. Flores struck out five and walked two in the game. Tim Haines, Brian Martin and Matt Reilly combined to blank Pensacola over the last three innings in the game.

Ed Montague was 2-for-4 in the game with two runs batted in and now has five hits in the first two games of the series against his former club. Gautreau extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 2-for-2 at the plate, including the home run.

Dane DeValk (1-2) took the loss as he allowed 10 runs on 12 hits in his six innings of work.

The Cats go for a series sweep of the Pelicans on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Dan Grybash (1-2) will start for the Cats and Clegg Snipes (2-1) will be on the hill for Pensacola.
