Grand Prairie, TX (6.04.08) - El Paso used an eight run fourth inning to cruise past the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 13-2, on Wednesday night at QuikTrip Park.
El Paso got the games first two runs in the top of the third inning. Stantrell smith led off with a grounder to third that went off Edwin Maldonado's mitt, down the left field line, he would reach second on the E-5. Brian Cooksey drilled a single into shallow center field that plated Smith for the first run. Cooksey would reach third on a walk and grounder, eventually moving the score to 2-0 on a wild pitch for Zac Stott.
El Paso put the game away in the top of the fourth inning, scoring eight runs. The Diablos were able to bat around and didn't have a player retired until the tenth batter came up to the plate. El Paso used five base hits and four errors to damage in the inning.
Zac Stott (2-2) earned the loss for Grand Prairie. He started the game and lasted just three innings, allowing four runs, one earned, with two hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Ben Brockman lasted two innings in relief, giving up seven runs, none earned, with five hits and two walks with no strikeouts.
The Diablos added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Brian Cooksey came up with his third RBI of the game, plating Stantrell Smith to put El Paso up 11-0.
Grand Prairie added their first two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Brandon Carter grounded to the second baseman who threw to second for the first out, allowing David Espinosa to score. Victor Burgos legged out an infield single, allowing Drew Holder to score from third, putting the AirHogs behind 11-2.
In the top of the ninth inning Smith belted a two run blast to left field to extend El Paso's lead to 13-2.
David Whigham (3-2) earned the win for El Paso. He lasted 6.1 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, with five hits, five stirkeouts, and three walks.
The AirHogs will close out their home stand tomorrow night against El Paso. AirHogs righty Nat Harris (1-1, 5.79 ERA) will take on righty Josh Neitz (2-3, 7.09 ERA) at 7:05 PM.
