St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (June 4, 2008) - With tornado warnings in the area all night the St. Paul Saints and Lincoln Saltdogs sat through an hour and 13 minute rain delay, but in the end the Saints lost for only the second time on their long roadtrip 7-4 at Haymarket Park on Wednesday night.
The Saints jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Tim Brown singled Brian Sprout to third and Marcel Longmire drove home Sprout with a single. Jason Colson had a sacrifice fly scoring Brown giving the Saints the early lead.
The Saltdogs, however, exploded in the bottom of the first for four runs. The Saints had given up just four runs in the first inning all season, but the Saltdogs sent nine men to the plate while plating four. The big blow was a three-run homer by Dustin Yount to right, his third of the season. Eduardo Rios followed with a walk and moved to third on a single from Mario Delgado. Rios scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Luis Perez.
The Saltdogs tacked on a run in the second when Jonny Kaplan walked, was balked to second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a two out single from Rios.
In the bottom of the fourth the two teams sat through the long rain delay and the Saints started to chip away at the three run lead in the sixth as Kevin Sullivan clubbed his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to right making it 5-3.
In the seventh Scooter Jordan led off with a single, moved to third on two ground outs and scored on a Longmire single. Longmire finished the night 2-4 with two RBI.
The Saltdogs tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a two-run homer from Rios, his fifth of the season.
The Saints conclude their nine game road trip and the three game series against the Saltdogs on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (5-0, 2.45) to the mound while the Saltdogs are TBA.
